New Bicycle Medical Team Rolls At
Special Events
The Green Township Department of Fire and EMS has a new team that aims to speed help to any medical emergencies at special events in Green Township's parks or facilities. Using specially equipped bicycles, team members can reach injured or sick people faster than teams on foot, and can go places ambulances cannot. The new team saw its first event at a concert and fireworks at Kuliga Park on July 3rd. Fortunately there were no emergencies requiring the team's attention at this event.
Team members are all paramedics or emergency medical technicians (EMTs) for Green Township Fire and EMS. In addition to already being certified as paramedics or EMTs, team members will also undergo the same bicycle training that police officers complete for bicycle certification.
Mack Fire Incorporated completely funded the startup of the unit, funding all equipment, uniforms, and training. Green Township Fire and EMS Chief Douglas J. Witsken approached Mack Fire Inc., a local civic organization, with the idea for the team because of the past and future expansion of the Township's park system and increasing number of public events. Chief Witsken said; "We cannot thank Mack Fire Inc. enough for their continuing support. In the past they have bought us many things, including the bike team equipment, thermal imaging cameras, and other equipment that help us serve the public."
The bike team has two bicycles similar to those used by police officers. In this case they are outfitted with advanced life support equipment including a defibrillator, intravenous fluids, and more. They also carry basic supplies like bandages and oxygen. The team is still awaiting their new uniforms, specifically designed for bicycle duty.
